How to transfer data from MTN to MTN in Ghana

· 4 min read

Short answer: you cannot move a data bundle you have already bought from your MTN line to another MTN number. MTN Ghana does not offer that today, whatever older posts say. What you can do is buy a new bundle straight onto the other person's number, and that takes less than a minute. Here are the three ways.

Why you cannot transfer a bundle you already have

Older guides describe an MTN data transfer or data share code. That service is no longer available in Ghana. Once a bundle lands on a SIM, it stays on that SIM until it is used up or expires. *198# (Me2U) still exists, but it shares airtime credit, not data, so the other person would still have to buy their own bundle with it.

Option 1: buy for them on *138#

MTN's own data menu lets you buy a bundle for another MTN number and pay from your airtime or Mobile Money.

  1. Dial *138# from your MTN line.
  2. Choose to buy a data bundle.
  3. When asked who it is for, pick the option for another number.
  4. Enter their MTN number twice to confirm it.
  5. Choose the bundle, then pay with airtime or MoMo (enter your PIN if asked).

The menu numbers MTN uses inside *138# change from time to time. Read each screen instead of typing a sequence from memory.

Option 2: the myMTN app

In the myMTN app, go to Buy/Send, choose Data, pick a bundle, choose Others, enter the recipient's number and pay with MoMo or airtime. It is the same bundle as *138#, just with a screen instead of a menu.

Option 3: buy online for any number

Both MTN options only work from an MTN line, and you pay MTN's standard menu price. An online data shop is often cheaper per gigabyte and works from any phone, even if your own line is Telecel or AirtelTigo or you are outside Ghana.

On DataYego you choose an MTN bundle, enter the number that should receive it, and pay with Mobile Money or card through Paystack. No account is needed and the bundle is sent automatically. Every order gets a reference starting with YG- so you can track it. Compare sizes on our MTN bundle list first.

Check the number before you pay

  • Ask them to dial *156# to read their own MTN number off the screen.
  • Make sure the number is really on MTN. Some numbers have moved network and kept their old prefix.
  • A bundle sent to the wrong number cannot be pulled back, by MTN or by any shop.

Quick answers

Is there an MTN data transfer code? Not for passing on a bundle you own. To give someone data, buy it for their number on *138#, in the myMTN app, or online.

Can I send MTN data to a Telecel or AirtelTigo number? No. MTN bundles only work on MTN SIMs. Buy that network's own bundle instead, which you can also do on DataYego.

Can I share airtime instead? Yes, *198# (Me2U) sends airtime credit to another MTN number. See all the codes in our MTN codes guide.

Pick a bundle, enter their number, pay with MoMo or card. No account needed.
