Free data in Ghana: what is real, what is a scam, and how to get the real kind

· 6 min read

Type "free data" into any search box in Ghana and you get two things: a handful of honest ways to pay less for data, and a flood of links, WhatsApp forwards and apps that promise gigabytes for nothing and end with your Mobile Money PIN in someone else's hands. This guide separates the two.

The one rule that beats every scam: nobody who is really giving you data needs your Mobile Money PIN or the one-time code (OTP) sent to your phone. Not a network, not a shop, not a friend. If a "free data" offer asks for either, it is theft, however official it looks.

Where real free data comes from

1. Network bonuses and promos

MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo all run bonus campaigns from time to time: extra data on top of a bundle, a bonus for buying through their own app, a welcome offer on a new SIM, or a special bundle for a holiday weekend. These are real because they come from the network itself, through its own app, its own short code or its official social accounts. They are also small and temporary, and they change often, so check the network's own channels for what is running this month rather than trusting a forwarded message about it.

2. Referral and invite rewards

Shops reward you for bringing customers. On DataYego, when you share your invite link and a friend buys their first bundle, your friend pays our agent price on that first bundle, and you get GH₵1.00 in your DataYego wallet once their order is delivered. If that friend goes on to become a DataYego agent and pays their first month, you get another GH₵5.00. There is no limit on how many friends you invite, and the reward is data money you spend in the shop, so it is free data in the plain sense: data you did not pay for.

Your link is in the Invite & earn panel on the home page and in your account once you sign up. Share it on WhatsApp; the preview carries your name.

3. Giveaways

A giveaway is a bundle at a special price, sometimes a token amount, for a limited number of people, one claim per phone number. DataYego announces ours on the WhatsApp channel first, and the giveaway page always shows the one that is running. When nothing is running the page says so. A real giveaway never asks you to forward a message to ten groups, install an unknown app or enter your PIN anywhere except the normal Mobile Money prompt on your own phone.

4. Paying less in the first place

Not free, but the nearest thing: a data shop buys bundles in volume and sells them below the standard menu price, so the same gigabytes cost less than they do on the short code. Compare by price per gigabyte, not by the headline number; our guide to the cheapest bundles shows how, and the prices page has every bundle we sell with today's price and validity.

How to spot a free-data scam in three seconds

  • It asks for your PIN or OTP. The only place your Mobile Money PIN belongs is the USSD prompt on your own phone when you are paying for something you chose. A website, a form, a WhatsApp chat or a phone call that asks for it is a scam, every time.
  • It asks you to forward it. "Share with 10 groups to activate" is how the scam spreads. Networks and shops do not need you to forward anything to give you data.
  • It comes from a link, not a place you know. A real network bonus is in the network's app or on its official short code. A real shop promo is on the shop's own website. A shortened link in a forward, or a lookalike address with one letter changed, is the warning sign.
  • It needs an app you have never heard of. Apps that promise free data in exchange for "verification" harvest contacts, messages and sometimes MoMo access. The networks' own apps are the only ones worth installing for bonuses.
  • The amount is absurd. 50GB free for everyone is not a promotion any network can afford. Real bonuses are a few hundred megabytes or a small top-up on a bundle you bought.

If you have already entered your PIN somewhere

  1. Change your Mobile Money PIN now, from your own phone, through the network's USSD menu or app.
  2. Check your MoMo balance and recent transactions. Report anything you did not do to your network's customer line straight away; the sooner you call, the better the chance of a reversal.
  3. If you installed an app, uninstall it and change the passwords of any accounts that were open on the phone.
  4. Tell the group the message came from. Most people forward these in good faith and do not know.

The honest summary

Real free data in Ghana is small, specific and comes from a source you can name: a network bonus in the network's own app, a referral reward from a shop you already use, a giveaway with a stated number of claims. Everything else is a way of getting your PIN. Use the real kinds, ignore the rest, and spend the money you save on a bigger bundle.

Share it with a friend: they pay the agent price on their first bundle, and you get data money in your wallet when it is delivered.
