MTN number not approved for data: what it means and how to fix it
· 5 min read
You buy an MTN bundle from a data shop, the payment goes through, and instead of the bundle landing the order sits on "verification" or the shop tells you the number is "not approved". Nothing is wrong with your phone and nothing is wrong with your money. The number has simply not been through a check that MTN runs once, the first time a number receives a bundle from a third-party seller.
What "not approved" actually means
Bundles sold by shops reach your line through MTN's own systems, and MTN keeps a list of numbers that are cleared to receive them. A number that has never received a shop bundle before is not on that list yet. The first bundle to it has to wait while MTN verifies the number; after that, the number is approved and every later bundle goes through without the wait.
This is a one-time check per number, not something that happens on every order. It is also why buying for a new number, a relative's number or a customer's number can take longer the first time and be routine afterwards.
The four states a number can be in
| What the check says | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | MTN accepts bundles to this number straight away. | Buy as normal. |
| Not yet approved | The number has not been verified by MTN yet. | You can still buy. MTN verifies the number first, which can take a few days, and the order delivers once it is approved. Or submit the number for verification before you buy. |
| Verification pending with MTN | The number has already been submitted and MTN is working on it. | Wait. You can still buy; the order delivers once MTN approves. |
| Blocked | Our supplier cannot send bundles to this number. | Buy for this number through MTN's own channels (*138#) instead. |
Check any MTN number for free before you buy
The Check MTN number page tells you which state a number is in. Type one number, or paste up to a hundred if you sell data and want to clear a customer list in one go. It is free, it needs no account, and it only works for MTN numbers (024, 025, 053, 054, 055, 059); Telecel and AirtelTigo do not run this check.
If the number is not yet approved, the same page lets you submit it for verification straight away, so by the time you want to buy, the wait is already over or well under way.
What happens to an order placed on an unapproved number
The order is not lost and the money is not gone. It waits with its status visible on the Track Order page until MTN approves the number, then delivers. If it cannot be delivered, contact support with your YG- reference and the team resolves it under the refund terms; they see the same status you do.
Selling data? Check your customers' numbers in bulk before you take their money. A first order that sits for days is the fastest way to lose a customer, and the check takes seconds.
Why this check exists
MTN runs the verification so that bundles sold outside its own channels reach genuine, active numbers. It protects the network and, in the end, the buyer: a bundle cannot be sent to a number that is not real. It is an inconvenience the first time and invisible after that.
In short
- "Not approved" means MTN has not verified the number yet. It is a one-time check per number.
- Check the number for free first; submit it for verification if it is not approved.
- You can still buy. The order waits with a visible status and delivers once MTN approves.
- After the first approved bundle, every later bundle to that number goes through without the wait.
Free, no account, one number or a hundred. Submit unapproved numbers for verification in the same place.
